Lived on Sea Island since: 1985

Board Member since: Many years starting around 1985 with a couple of breaks.

What inspired you to join the SICA Board?

To meet my neighbours and help create a fun, supportive community.

What would you personally like to work on with SICA?

Special events and programming as I believe that is where the community comes together and grows stronger.

What do you think SICA should be working on and be trying to accomplish as a group?

Getting more people involved so that we share the workload and the fun of being part of this community. Becoming more a voice for the community.

    A bit more about Barbara:

When we bought our first house here in 1985, we only planned to stay for a couple of years, but we soon discovered what a great community this is and a wonderful place to bring up children. 38 years later we are still here! Our children, now in their thirties, participated in parent and tots, attended Burky’s and the elementary school. We have all formed special friendships in the community that will last a lifetime. I want to help keep Burkeville the special place it is for the next generation.

Continuing to offer opportunities to build connections within the community.

    A bit more about Sara:

I wanted to be more connected to my community, meet more Burkeville neighbors and help support fun local activities.

What would you personally like to work on with SICA?

I help to represent the voice of young families.  I have helped to continue the weekly Parent at Tot sessions at our community hall.

What do you think SICA should be working on and be trying to accomplish as a group?

Getting more residents excited to be involved in the planning and execution of community events so that we can continue to offer fun family community activities throughout the year.

    A bit more about Christine:

I grew up in Richmond.  I am a nurse.  I love travelling, camping, skiing and gardening.  I live in Burkeville with my Husband Umar, son Ayden and baby girl Elina.  We love to participate in community events from the pony rides at Burkeville days, to egg hunts, community breakfasts, garden tours and dance parties.  We are often playing at the park, come say hello!

    ___

Lived on Sea Island since: 1987

Board Member Since: 2026 for the 2nd time. I was VP for several years prior to 2009. (sorry, I don't remember how many)

What inspired you to join the SICA Board?

In the past, I had children in the neighbourhood and felt I should help to make this neighbourhood a great place to grow up. Now that they are gone, I'd like to ensure it remains a good, safe place to raise a family.

What would you personally like to work on with SICA?

I would like to ensure we have a good Emergency Preparedness Plan for the neighbourhood, should the "big one" hit!

What do you think SICA should be working on and be trying to accomplish as a group?

To ensure we have a good working relationship with our neighbours (YVR and the City of Richmond). And to ensure Burkeville remains a good, safe place to raise a family.

    A bit more about Dianna:

I never thought I'd be living here so long, but then again, I can hardly imagine living anywhere else in the Lower Mainland!

    ___

Lived on Sea Island since: 2019

    Board Member Since: 2026

What inspired you to join the SICA Board?

We have a wonderful and close knit community, and I’d like to contribute to helping develop and maintain our close-knit and unique slice of Sea Island.

What would you personally like to work on with SICA?

In a perfect world, I’d like to help create a community garden space where Burkeville residents can teach, learn and help themselves to produce when they need it. I’d also like to help advocate for other projects and spaces that help us build and grow as a community.

What do you think SICA should be working on and be trying to accomplish as a group?

A comprehensive flood and evacuation plan in the event of emergencies, protection and expansion of tree cover in Burkeville to help combat some of the effects of climate change, maintaining our schedule of community events, ensuring that newcomers are welcomed and informed around community initiatives, and (selfishly) advocating for improved signage around the use of engine brakes on Miller Rd.

    A bit more about Jinny:

I love to camp with my husband and dog, I enjoy reading history books, especially about medieval and Tudor England, and I love to experiment with gluten free baking.
